(Journal) — Studio
Three weeks at Hotel Nordlys taught us more about light, shadow and slowness than any brief could.

Every project at Maren begins with a question rather than an answer. With Hotel Nordlys, that question was simple: what will still feel right in ten years?
Starting slowly
We spend the first weeks gathering, not deciding. Samples, references, conversations with the people who will live with the work every day. It is unglamorous, and it is where most of the good decisions are made.
By the time we sketch, the brief has usually changed shape. That is the point. A slower start gives us room to notice what matters before momentum makes it expensive to change.
The best details are the ones nobody points out — they simply make everything feel considered.
What we keep
We keep what wears well: honest materials, fewer colours, type that reads at a glance. Everything else has to earn its place. The result is quieter than most first drafts, and it lasts.
If you are starting something similar, we’re always happy to talk it through.
